The Office of the Prosecutor General of Georgia categorically rejects the information as if the representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office conclude deals with the relatives of convicted and the persons in pre-trial detention and offers the release of their relatives in exchange for the receipt of pledges to vote.

ANALYTICAL RESEARCH ON THE CRIMINOLOGICAL SITUATION IN GEORGIA IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS OF 2007

In the first 6 months of 2007 (hereinafter reporting period) 29,687 crimes were reported throughout Georgia. This is 1417 fewer offences compared with the same period of 2006 when 31,104 crimes were reported. Accordingly, crime statistics for the reporting period show a 4.6 per cent decrease in the number of overall reported crime compared with the first half of 2006.

ABOUT THE PROSECUTION SERVICE OF GEORGIA

The mission of the Prosecution Service of Georgia is to advance the goals of the criminal justice system through the fair, independent and effective prosecution of criminal cases in Georgia and the procedural supervision of all criminal investigative agencies throughout the country.
The responsibilities of the Prosecution Service are prescribed in the Constitution of Georgia, the Organic Law of Georgia on the Prosecution Service, and the Criminal Procedure Code of Georgia. In exercising its authority and functions, the Prosecution Service complies with international standards for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The Prosecution Service is independent of the judiciary. It operates under the direction and guidance of the Prosecutor General of Georgia, and is comprised of the Office of the Prosecutor General, two offices in the Autonomous Republics of Abkhazia and Adjara, eight regional offices, and thirty district offices.
